The Formation of the Westport Women’s Bowling Club – initiated by a letter from Mr Harry White, the first Secretary of the Port Macquarie West Grand United Bowling Club, a meeting was called by Dot Kelly, Grace Oates, Eve Brooks and Marion McLaren with the idea of forming a Club to be known as The Port Macquarie West Women’s Bowling Club.
On 22 October 1959 with a membership of 45 “The Port Macquarie West Women’s Bowling Club” was officially opened by Mrs G Pattison, State Vice President of the NSW Women’s Bowling Association. Mrs Pattison was deputising for the State President, Mrs Mogford, who at the time was unable to attend due to illness.
Foundation office bearers for 1958 were as follows. Patrons Mrs E McMillan and Mrs C McLaren, President: Mrs Thelma Anderson, Vice Presidents: Mrs M Taylor, Mrs D Kelly, Miss M McLaren, Hon Secretary Mrs Hetty, Hon Treasurer: Mrs Elise Argue. Committee Members: Mesdames G Oates, R Bransdon, E Woodcock, E Healey, I Bradley, M Freeman. Selectors: Mesdames G Oates, V Thomas, N Slater.
The Committee not only had the task of administering the activities of the club, but were involves in the formation of the greens along with Mr Sid Smith the Greenkeeper.
The Ladies provided the meals for both the Men’s and Women’s Clubs and on the occasion of the official opening of the Grand United Port Macquarie West Bowling Club, under the direction of President George Bale, worked the kitchen and waited on tables.
